Early Works

Since 1999 Miklos Gaál used a large format camera and a selective sharpness for his landscapes, cityscapes and scenes of everyday life. Those modell like images influenced a whole generation of artists and photographers. Nevertheless Gaál was not primaryly interested in effects of miniatures (which are caused by partial sharpness within the photo) but in different aspects of perception. All of his works, early and late, relate to this.

Miklos Gaál

*1974, Espoo, Finland

Miklos Gaál is one of the most acclaimed Finnish photographers of his generation. He is particularly interested in emphasizing the subjective nature of experience by decontextualising the subject matter. Gaál's unconventional approach to his photography work makes him a unique artist. In a published interview with art historian Dr. Lars Mextorf, Gaál summarizes his approach to photography: "As my perception of making images was that of a draughtsman involving a close relationship to the process of making, in photographic techniques also I had the idea of producing images utilizing photographic materials and techniques in various different ways... such as the stopping of a moment and the illusion of reality."

Gaál lives and works in Amsterdam/ NL.
