Nezaket Ekici

Videoperformance 2017

Duration: 7:39 min., HD, sound, Edition: 6 + 2 AP

' 'Prosthesis' is a video performance inspired by a sarcophagus in the Vatican Museums. On the sarcophagus I discovered sculptures whose damaged or missing body parts were partly replaced or supplemented with marble and plaster. This looked quite uncanny. I then made casts of body parts of mine and wore them in the appropriate places of my body, so it seemed as if parts had been added or replaced.
The human being is a prosthesis god. The body of man, ready to transmit suffering and aversion at all times, becomes godlike when he applies all his prostheses. With the metaphor of the "god of the prosthesis", Freud already points to the desire of man to leave the lack of man behind through technology. For example, we built bicycles and cars that serve as locomotion prostheses and move us quickly from one place to another. With glasses we see better and with rockets we even move into space. But man is not a god.' (Nezaket Ekici)

The artist shows herself with marble-like casts of her own body. It looks as if a part of her body has to be replaced by a cast and added. The marble-like fragments, such as facial features, elbows, abdomen, chest and shoulder parts cover seemingly damaged areas of the body. During her stay in Rome at the Villa Massimo (early 2017), the artist became aware of sculptures in the Vatican Museum, which were restored by restorers by covering and completing some damaged or missing parts of the body with marble casts. In a symbolic way, the artist questions the project of the deification of man and expresses a discomfort that goes hand in hand with the fragmentation of our lifeworld without questioning.

*1970, Kirsehir, Turkey

In her works and performances, the artist focuses on topics such as gender, religion, Turkish-German identity, art history and architecture. Ideas, thoughts and designs form the basis of her work. The ideas come from everyday life, the social and cultural atmosphere and present themselves as performances and installations. The artist uses her body as a narrative instrument, and and deals with aspects such as movement, space, material, body, action and interaction. Nezaket Ekici lives and works in Berlin, Stuttgart and Istanbul.
