Atatürk

2013, video installation, 2–6 min depending on the version, color, mute
Each video shows a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The flatscreens are hung high above eye level. The original images are monumental flags hanging in front of five storey buildings for a national holiday. From time to time the wind starts to move the flag and animates the image. The facial expression changes from sometimes stirn to sometimes amused with an ironical smile.

ERATNAC IMETAISHAL (LASCIANTEMI CANTARE)

Re-Import eines italienischen Exportschlagers, 2007

1-channel video projection, 4:12min, PAL, color, mute

Miralamentira

2009, video installation, 4:33 min., colour, mute
The screen shows a plate filled with water. Slowly the reflection of a person appears in the plate. The protagonist starts to drink her own reflection untill the image dissapears and nothing lasts but an empty tray.

Still Water

2010, video installation, 12:48 min., color, mute
The video work shows a dark tabletop with various objects. A hand with a paintbrush coats the table surface with water. Through the foreshortening of the camera perspective, the water acts like a right angle in the middle of the likewise right-angled picture detail, like a framed second image. In the reflection on the water one can see a window. Later, as a heater is installed under the table, the evaporating water starts to deprive the view outside.

full stop

The Full Stop edition features the final full stops from fifteen German love stories published over the last three centuries. Sophia Pompéry photographed the culminating full stop from the first original printed edition of each love story with the use of an optical and scanning electron microscope. The title of the novel was embossed in the paper. The project was realized in cooperation with the National Library of Berlin and the Rathgen Research Laboratory, the leading institution for conservation science, art technology, and archaeometry at the National Museums in Berlin. An acompanying catalogue was published within the scope of Goldrausch Art IT program, promoting emerging artists based in Berlin.

Rhetorische Übung

Pompéry thematises the language of gestures in the photographic series Rhetorische Übung (Rhetorical Practise) in which glass hands re-enact familiar gestures of politicians. Gestural communication as a means of demonstrating power is contrasted with the virulent topic of the transparency of power relations.

Ligthining up Burning Down

2009, Video, 0:20 min., Farbe, Sound
The video lighting up, burning down shows a candle that is burning at both ends. The noise of a vacuum cleaner off camera explains how it is physically possible for a flame to burn upside down.

Sophia Pompéry

*1984, Berlin, Germany

Sophia Pompéry focuses on apparently everyday occurrence and brings the unique in it to sight. The candle flame that casts no shadow; spreaded water on floorboards that reflects a window form, two popcorns that look unbelievably identical - conceptual art between installation, photography and video.

"Reflecting reflection: These terms with their philosophical and physical double interpretation of thinking and mirrowing are still central to the work of Sophia Pompéry.” (Annelie Lütgens, Berlinische Galerie, art director Grafische Sammlung)
