Reminiscence of Being a Woman

A visual study of (self-)objectification and (self-)identity

“The reminiscence of being a woman” is a personal research about the role of women in a traditional society. It investigates the evolution of objectification, while using domestic chores for its visualization. It vanishes the line between the female body and objects, while dehumanising its subject by intentionally not showing her facial features and raises the question: Where does ones identity end and becomes the body nothing but a (functional) object (and vice versa)?

Pilars of Home

The series consists of ninety-eight images of balancing sculptures staged within 30 minutes. This duration is a symbolic metaphor for the time frame a young artist being a mother can spare for her own preoccupation while raising a baby. As the home is the center of the world during this period, the artist body as well as everyday life items provide the material the sculptures are made of. Complementary to the aspects of composition the sculptures reflect on life as a juggling act as well as on female identy.

The floor-to-ceiling constructions relay on their own inner stability while being framed only by the floor and the ceiling. The colorful hand-built pillars vary in size and complexity, depending on their territory. As the objects are being piled up, they become a coherent entity, but their delicate arrangement and balancing structure makes them vulnerable as they can be destroyed at any moment.

Csilla Klenyánszki

*1986, Budapest, Ungarn
